UAID Symposium 2015: Finding Sustainable Solutions to Eliminate Health Inequities

  • University of Miami (map)

FEATURED EVENTS:

Ebola Epidemic Simulation - An American citizen traveling in West Africa has contracted Ebola and wishes to be transported home for medical care. The controversial request sparks debate among politicians, medical personnel, the media, and the general public. You will be assigned to one of the major stakeholder groups, which will convene at the UAID Symposium to decide on a course of action. Factors to consider will include the protection of U.S. citizens by the American government, public safety and risk of further outbreak, logistical issues with transport, the high fatality rate of Ebola, and the responsibility (or burden) of developed countries to care for non-citizens.

Innovative Social Change Competition (ISCC) - You will have the opportunity to develop your own original ideas into tangible instruments for combating health inequities. As a small group, you will design a petition or PSA relevant to UAID’s mission. At the end of the symposium, each group will present their final product, and you will have the opportunity to implement the product at your own chapter.  Each individual in the winning group will win a $50 cash prize!

Debates - You will experience the heat of some of the debates that are occurring on the forefront of health policy. Issues addressed will include global vs. local efforts, serving vs. donating, top-down vs. bottom-up strategies, and moral relativism vs. absolutism. Come prepared with an open mind and a willingness to defend your beliefs!

Case Studies - Experts from the tops of their respective fields will be presenting case studies from real and fictional events or problems. This will provide an opportunity for you to interact with some remarkable individuals who work towards solutions for health inequities every day.

Speakers - There is an outstanding line-up of speakers who can’t wait to meet you at the conference! All speakers are well-known in their respective fields, ranging from business to research to activism and beyond. See the itinerary below for more information.
